New Orleans Background
On July 1, 2009, PeacePlayers International (PPI) began to transition its New Orleans program into the hands of a locally-based organization. Past and present PPI staff are working to ensure an effective transfer of ownership and, with the exception of a short summer break, programming shall continue as usual for New Orleans participants.
The two primary factors leading to this transition were PPI's organization-wide strategic planning process and a concern regarding program funding. PPI recently completed a strategic planning process, during which the organization decided to concentrate its mission on peace-building, which was not the focus of its New Orleans
operations. Additionally, a lack of funding created challenges regarding PPI's ability to guarantee the New Orleans program's long-term sustainability.
PPI shall continue communication with its New Orleans contacts and provide equipment to ensure a smooth transition for all program participants. PPI thanks its partners, staff members and volunteers for their commitment to creating a positive impact on the community of New Orleans. PPI would also like to extend a special thank you to staff members Taylor Smiley and Aggrey Sam who led the organization's New Orleans efforts.
